MONCKS CORNER, S.C.---The students at J. K. Gourdin Elementary School will be able to "Drop & Read Everyday and Marvel at their Success" in the "DREAMS Literature Lounge" provided by Pamela Nichols. Ms. Nichols wants to create a special relaxing atmosphere in which students can enjoy reading, thereby sharpening their reading and comprehension skills.

At Whitesville Elementary School, Nikka King’s students will enjoy a fun and challenging language arts center which will enhance the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of each student in the "Let’s Get Centered" classroom!

At Sangaree Middle School, Lauren P. Degueldre’s 6th grade students will learn the beauty of art and its connection and importance to Math and other subject areas in the "Stained Glass Geometry" project.

At Berkeley High School, each of Denise Lawson’s special education students will have an opportunity build a portfolio of interests, skills and abilities in conjunction the Bridges Credential Portfolio to present in an interview for consideration for a training program or for employment.

At Stratford High School, Susan Ingerson will be able to encourage her resource students to read contemporary literature from the South Carolina Young Adult Book Award nominee list in "A Yen for YABA".

All these projects represent grants awarded by the Berkeley County Foundation for Education. Grant recipients were announced during the Berkeley County School Board Meeting on February 14, 2006 at 7:30 PM.

"These $500 ‘mini-grants’ as they are called are a part of our on-going commitment to fund innovative projects requested by our teachers in order to improve our public schools in Berkeley County," said Foundation President John S. West. "We are pleased to fund these projects that we know will make a difference in the lives of school children."

In November 2005, the Foundation announced it would begin accepting applications for mini-grants for Spring 2006. Fourteen applications were received.

"The Foundation’s goal has been to accept and award mini-grants twice a year," West said. "I think it is important to note that we have awarded grants to schools throughout Berkeley County."

The Foundation is a Moncks Corner-based non-profit organization founded in 2000 by concerned citizens interested in fostering public education in Berkeley County.

"The Foundation is very appreciative of the enthusiasm and involvement shown by the public toward our young organization," said West. "We plan to build on our momentum and encourage anyone who desires to get involved to contact us."
