News: Essay Contest Winners Announced

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.---The Berkeley County Foundation For Education announced the student winners of a district-wide essay contest entitled "America: Stronger After September 11, 2001" at the Berkeley County School District's meeting on December 10, 2002.

The winners are:
High School:
1st place Yelena Ten 11th grade Timberland High School
2nd place Katie Orvin 12th grade Timberland High School
3rd place Amy Ballew 9th grade Berkeley High School
Middle School:
1st place Sarah Cardwell 8th grade Hanahan Middle School
2nd place Katie Hohorst 8th grade College Park Middle School
3rd place Shanna Richen 6th grade Sedgefield Middle School
Elementary School:
1st place Ahja Glaze 4th grade St. Stephen Elementary School
2nd place Chelsea Williams 5th grade Whitesville Elementary School
3rd place Dachia White 4th grade Boulder Bluff Elementary

Each of the first place winners received a U.S. Saving's Bond in the amount of $500.00. Second and third place winners received savings bonds of $250.00 and $100.00 respectively.

Foundation Chairman John West said, "We're so proud of the scholarship and talent of these young people. The foundation board had a real challenge making the final selections. The quality was outstanding."

West went on to say, "The Berkeley County Foundation For Education believes in rewarding excellence in student achievement. An essay contest about September 11 seemed to us to be an appropriate subject. It gave students across the district an opportunity to express their feelings and sharpen their writing skills. We hope to continue to sponsor an essay contest annually."

Also brought before the School District members at the December 10 meeting was the announcement of the Foundation's Fall 2002 teacher mini-grant winners. The winners are:
Bruce Barber Timberland High Discovering the Fun of Physics
Amy B. Cooper Berkeley Elementary Book in the Bag
Amanda Frisby Sedgefield Intermediate Career Library
Teresa M. Jones College Park Elementary Caring for Critters Creates Kids with Character
Rachel Owens Cross High School Drama at Cross

Foundation Board member Percy Beauford congratulated the winners. "The Foundation is proud to support the initiative and imagination of teachers across the district to make their classrooms the best learning environment possible. We believe investing in the efforts of our classroom teachers continues to be a wise use of the Foundation's resources."
