11/15/01
MONCKS CORNER, S.C.---At Berkeley High School, the reading skills of Tookie Harrop's students will be enhanced through "Books for Berkeley."
At J.K. Gourdin Elementary School, Yvette Elsey's students will sharpen their science skills by building and firing 10 rockets in the "Blast Off! Model Rocket Project."
At Hanahan High School, Amy Guerry's students with disabilities will create personal portfolios to enhance their employment possibilities after graduation through CABLE, the Creative Alternative Biography of Lifelong Excellence."
At Macedonia Middle School, Gwen Robbin's students will open and manage "The Fox Shop," a student-run store.
At Sangaree Intermediate School, Denise Zackerl's students will explore the wonders of the oceans and freshwater as "Nautical Navigators."
All these projects represent grants awarded by the Berkeley County Foundation for Education. Grant recipients were announced during the Teachers of the Year Breakfast Nov. 15 at the Oaks Country Club in Goose Creek.
"These $500 ‘mini-grants' as they are called, represent the first time the Foundation has disbursed funds to improve our public schools in Berkeley County," said Foundation President John S. West. "We are pleased to fund these projects that we know will make a difference in the lives of school children".
Earlier this year, the Foundation announced it would begin accepting applications for mini-grants. Fifteen applications were received. West said another round of applications will be accepted next spring.
"The Foundation's goal is to accept and award mini-grants twice a year," West said. "I think it is important to note that we have awarded grants to schools throughout Berkeley County. We have schools from Moncks Corner, Hanahan, St. Stephen, Macedonia and Sangaree.
The Foundation is a Moncks Corner-based non-profit organization founded two years ago by concerned citizens interested in fostering public education in Berkeley County. Last June, the Foundation hosted a successful fund-raiser at the Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner featuring University of South Carolina head football coach Lou Holtz as guest speaker.
"The Foundation is very appreciative of the enthusiasm and involvement shown by the public toward our young organization," said West. "We plan to build on our momentum and encourage anyone who desires to get involved to contact us."
