The Berkeley County Foundation for Education (BCFE) is an active, positive and dependable contributor to the betterment of public education in our county.
Financially, BCFE is in very good shape. Through the generous support of our patrons and the Board of Directors' careful and conservative management of our investments, we have a solid fiscal base. Our overhead remains very small. Our corpus is safe, growing and working.
BCFE continues to believe in teachers and their students. We understand that success begins in the classroom. Our signature teacher mini-grant program remains popular and successful. Since 2001, BCFE has donated $23,134.40 to classroom teachers, as well as a total of $3,700 for Teacher of the Year awards.
In the fall of 2004, BCFE initiated a new annual scholarship program in memory of the legendary Berkeley High School football coach Gerald Moody. The emphasis of the scholarship is recognizing leadership and teamwork qualities.
In the fall of 2005, BCFE was requested to administer the Josh Swicord Education Endowment Scholarship Fund. This Endowment provides a permanent remembrance of a young man who attended Berkeley High School and possessed outstanding character and integrity. This scholarship is available each year to graduating seniors of Berkeley High School with an emphasis on community service and financial need.
The accomplishments of BCFE and our potential going forward would not have been possible without the talent and tremendous dedication of our volunteer Board of Directors. Kathleen Bounds, Carole Bruno, Harriett Dangerfield, William Helmly, Jerlean Holmes, Booker Manigault, Jack Schurlknight and Gary Steele deserve our congratulations and continuing gratitude.
